VOTER REGISTRATION WEEKEND IN SOUTH AFRICA
First weekend of February 2024 is the second voter registration...
Embark on the journey towards a luminous future by participating in the democratic heartbeat of our nation! The Government passionately encourages all eligible youth to seize the opportunity to register and cast their votes in the impending 2024 provincial and national elections in South Africa. In a bid to empower citizens, the Electoral Commission of South Africa has organized its second voter registration weekend on February 3rd and 4th, 2024.
The initial registration weekend in November 2023 saw a remarkable 26.8 million voters, including 568,374 first-time registrants, shaping the democratic landscape. Even South Africans abroad can contribute to this democratic symphony by registering at the country's 120 high commissions, embassies, and consulates from January 26th to 28th, 2024.
A particularly inclusive approach extends the opportunity to offenders in correctional facilities, ensuring that even those behind bars exercise their fundamental right to vote between January 30th and February 1st, 2024. The Electoral Commission urges family members to facilitate the registration process for incarcerated individuals by delivering their identity documents in advance.
Seize the moment as all 296 voting stations nationwide welcome citizens from 08:00 to 17:00 during the registration weekend. Eligible citizens, 16 years and older, possessing a green bar-coded ID book, smart ID card, or temporary identity certificate, are called upon to shape the nation's destiny.
For those with internet access, online registration at https://registertovote.elections.org.za has been available since February 20th, 2023, eliminating the need to wait for the registration weekend. Current registered voters can conveniently verify their details and locate their voting station on the Electoral Commission website (www.elections.org.za) or by sending an SMS with their ID number to 32810 (charged at R1).
"As we commemorate 30 years of freedom and democracy, your vote becomes a beacon lighting the path to a brighter South Africa. By registering and voting, citizens wield the transformative power to shape the future, reinforcing democracy according to their collective will," asserts Nomonde Mnukwa, Acting Director of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
In this final stretch of the voter registration weekend, the Government earnestly calls upon citizens to register, ensuring that their voices resonate in the forthcoming elections. Let the brilliance of democracy shine through your active participation!
