HOW NIGERIAN AFROBEAT MUSIC HELPED MAKE MODERN DAY AFRICAN MUSIC GO GLOBAL

The year is 2005 and it is my first year of Highschool and to that point the only music I was into or had heard was American Hip Hop & Punk rock music which they played on MTV(the OG MTV) and whatever R&B my older sister played, but I had never heard much of Urban African music. Then they introduced Mtv Base and from that very moment everything changed, It was the first time I had been introduced to Nigerian music and this is the very moment were we insert Dbanj and Don Jazzy. This was the first time I heard Afro Beatz  and it was the video ''Why me'' by the one and only KoKo master. The first scene in the video is Dbanj and Don Jazzy standing side by side and it's so crazy that 5 years later from this moment these two would rise to the top of the African music scene.

At first I didn't really understand the music, it just wasn't for me or so I thought. Over the next ten years Afro beats completely dominated the soundscape on the continent and I believe one of the effects of the success of the genre was that it forced artists from all over the continent to become more authentically African. Don't get me wrong we had people like Hugh Masekela,Brenda Fassie and even Fela Khuti who had become international stars but this was a new generation, a generation that had been far removed from it's roots. Afrobeat artists where unapologetically African and that translated into the world embrassing the them wholeheartedly. The music reintroduced the world to Africa, no longer was it just American music running the airwaves, people like Wizkid,Davido and Burna Boy compeletely changed all of that. Places like the UK  began embrassing the Afrobeat sound which is also largely attributed to the large African diaspora which helped popularize the genre around the world. 16 years later after the introduction of MTV Base and Wizkid & Tems have a global smash hit with Essence and it has risen to the top of the US R&B Airplay chart on Billboard. This is not only a huge milestone for the genre but also for the entire continent. According to Billboard Wizkid is the first act to rule R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay in under nine weeks without having notched any previous top five hits on the chart since DaBaby sent "Suge" to the pole position in its eighth frame in June 2019.

AfroBeat gave birth to the biggest music stars on the continent and breathed new life into contemporary African music. Artist's from all the continent started looking inwards for inspiration and began making some really great music that connected with people all over the world. Authenticity is at the very centre of making great art, the people will always gravitate towards what they believe is real. Right now the South African genre Amapiano is taking over the UK and I believe it is the next African genre to create global superstars and it is because it is 100% authentically South African and the people feel it. From us here at The Gold Axis we would just like to give the Nigerian people their flowers for helping to start this revolution and helping to put African music on the world stage.
