THE PROBLEM WITH AKA's BHOVAMANIA

For the last 6 months we have all been anticipating the new project from one of the leading rappers in the country AKA and at midnight on the 6th of November it was finally released. We had already heard 5 of the 13 songs and when it dropped I went straight to listening to the entire project top to bottom. You have to understand that AKA is one of the biggest artists in the country because of his ability to make some of the best hit songs by bridging the gap between classic South African house music and modern day rap music. He has found the exact sweet spot where classic hits are made but with this new project he sounds completly uninspired. Ok let me explain...

Bhovamania sounds like a colection of songs that were created in an uninspired space for him, I mean I understand we were all in lockdown but this one just isn't it. For a man who has made a career for himself by crafting some of the most perfect songs we have heard in modern day South African Hip Hop this new project just doesn't hit as hard, he didn't even try with this one and we can all tell. That's the thing with being great, you have to be great at all times, it's a double-edged sword. If you put out great shit, then the people expect great shit from you all the time whether it's an album or an EP, we expect non stop hits. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying the songs suck, I actually fxck with the singles he had dropped before the project was out, those are pretty great records, Energy & Casino are some of my favourite songs to drop this year alone. it's the rest of the project I have a problem with. The rest of the project just isn't up to AKA standard. Some of the songs sound like they are throw away songs, it sounds like he made it without much thought and much intention, the most thought that was put into the project was the wrestling theme through out the project but other than that it's all momentary vibes.

Making art is tricky thing because it is all subjective, there is no right or wrong way to make it.The best art is the one that is polarizing, it evokes strong emotion out of you. Once the art is out in the world the people are allowed to feel how ever they want to about it. Some people really like the project while others can't stand it but one thing is that everyone feels something about it and from those standards I guess it has done it's job. The thing with music is that one week you can hate a project and the next week it's your favourite thing so we never know maybe a week from now I will have a different opinion but for now it's a strong no from me. What do you guys think about the project, share your comments with us and tell us how you liking the new Bhovamania.
